1. Overview

During the year under review, the Duty Lawyer Scheme had represented 25,096 defendants charged with criminal offences in the Magistrates’ Courts, representing a decrease of 6.38% over the previous year. The number of subjects represented in Care or Protection Proceedings in the Juvenile Courts was 246 representing a decrease of 6.46%. The Convention Against Torture (CAT) & Non-refoulement Claims Scheme had handled 3,122 claims representing an increase of 21.34% over the previous year. The Free Legal Advice Scheme had utilized 737 volunteer lawyers at nine evening centers advising 6,763 persons representing an increase of 3.43% over the previous year. The Tel Law Scheme had recorded a total of 24,383 calls representing an increase of 10.57% over the previous year. The Service’s website had recorded 415,024 hits, representing an increase of 2.76% over the previous year.
