Annual Report 2007 > 1. Overview

1.1 During the year under review, while the overall legal representation reported a moderate drop, the demand for legal advice and legal information has grown steadily.

1.2 During the year, the Duty Lawyer Scheme represented 38,640 defendants charged with criminal offences in the Magistrates’ and Juvenile Courts, representing a decrease of 3.56% over the previous year. The number of children represented in Care or Protection Proceedings in the Juvenile Courts was 2,530 representing an increase of 20.36%. The Free Legal Advice Scheme made 918 lawyers available at 9 evening centers advising 6,429 persons representing an increase of 0.11% over the previous year. The Tel Law Scheme recorded a total of 28,335 calls representing a drop of 13.97% over the previous year. The Service’s website on the other hand recorded 225,306 hits, representing an increase of 30.42% over the previous year.
