1. Overview

During the year under review, the Duty Lawyer Scheme had represented 23,742 defendants charged with criminal offences in the Magistrates’ Courts, representing a decrease of 5.40% over the previous year. The number of subjects represented in Care or Protection Proceedings in the Juvenile Courts was 203 representing a decrease of 17.48%. The Convention Against Torture (CAT) & Non-refoulement Claims Scheme had handled 3,358 claims representing an increase of 7.56% over the previous year. The Free Legal Advice Scheme had assigned 732 volunteer lawyers at nine evening centers advising 6,397 persons representing a decrease of 5.41% over the previous year. The Tel-Law Scheme had recorded a total of 17,738 calls representing a decrease of 27.25% over the previous year. The Service’s website had recorded 426,987 hits, representing an increase of 2.88% over the previous year
