Annual Report 2021 > 1. Overview

1.1 During the year under review, the Duty Lawyer Scheme had represented 18,679 defendants charged with criminal offences in the Magistrates’ Courts, representing an increase of 9.46% over the previous year. The number of subjects the Care or Protection Scheme represented in Care or Protection Proceedings in the Juvenile Courts was 181 representing an increase of 24.83%. The Legal Assistance Scheme for Non-refoulement Claimants had handled 1,826 claims representing an increase of 166.96% over the previous year. The Free Legal Advice Scheme had the pro bono service of 980 volunteer lawyers at nine evening centers advising 7,230 persons representing an increase of 28.99% over the previous year. The Tel Law Scheme had recorded a total of 14,153 calls representing a decrease of 28.17% over the previous year. The Tel Law website had recorded 443,051 hits representing a decrease of 2.46% over the previous year. The Duty Lawyer Service’s website’s Visitor Sessions had recorded 401,542 hits, representing an increase of 9.10% over the previous year.
