(701) WHAT TO DO ABOUT AIR POLLUTION

Voice

Air pollution is caused by all kinds of air pollutants: dust, vapour, smells and so on. There are many different sources and the major ones are the power plants, motor vehicles, industrial and commercial activities, construction activities and vessels. In terms of air pollution in urban areas, motor vehicles, particularly diesel vehicles, are the dominant sources.

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has the responsibility of enforcing Hong Kong's major air pollution laws. It has set up four Regional Offices to serve local communities by controlling polluting activities, taking enforcement actions and handling enquires and complaints.

If you are affected by air pollution such as dark smoke emissions from motor vehicle or industrial chimney, kitchen fume emission from restaurant, smoke emission from opening burning, asbestos release from the demolition works or dust emission from construction work, you can make a complaint to the EPD.

For enquiries, please contact the Local Control Offices or through the EPD's Customer Service Hotline of 2838 3111.

Date of amendment: 22nd February 2013
